LIZA FACT CHECKS:
Does Iowa still have Mafia?
No, their Mafioso appears to all have gone legit. In
this story, Tess father claims to be an honest business man, but he’s only more
careful when killing and muscling people. Truth is that Beneto longs for the
old days in Chicago where the mafia is still going strong. (The Chicago Mafia
remains alive and dangerous in real life. In fact, the Feds aren’t sure they’ll
ever curtail them.)

It is interesting how Mafia groups come and go. I suppose that they needed the bigger city life of Chicago rather than small towns.
Iowa had a teflon Don (never had a charge that stuck to him) up til 1967. When he was called into a Senate Committee he brought a metal case with his financials, but not the KEY to the case (which was locked) and his lawyer noted the key had not been listed in the subpena. Clever right? He killed someone late in his life, but before they could charge him with rackateering, he died of natural causes. So he remained upon his death a Don who killed many but was never convicted of a crime.
Dang – that is one smart Don! Or his attorney was smart. Either way…wow.
Yea, but that trick should only work once. Had he not died, he would have gone to prison on rackeering charges. Why they didn't charge him with murder I've no idea, but by dying, he remains a Don never found guilty of a single crime. His son went on to write a book about the mafia and would go onto the Howard Stern show all the time. He left Iowa and moved to California, baby! He declared himself an expert on the Mafia and would consult with writers and producers for a fee.
